The torture scandal began in February 1901, when the U.S. Army captured Emilio Aguinaldo, the leader of the Filipino independence movement. In an effort to extract information from Aguinaldo, U.S. soldiers subjected him to a series of brutal tortures, including waterboarding, electric shock, and the "water cure." Aguinaldo eventually broke down and gave the Americans the information they wanted, but the scandal was far from over.
News of the torture scandal quickly spread throughout the United States, and it sparked outrage from both the public and the press. President Theodore Roosevelt appointed a commission to investigate the allegations, and the commission's report confirmed that U.S. soldiers had indeed tortured Filipino prisoners. The scandal led to the dismissal of several high-ranking military officers, and it also damaged the reputation of the United States both at home and abroad.
The torture scandal is a dark chapter in American history, but it is also an important one. The scandal helped to expose the dark side of American imperialism, and it raised important questions about the limits of American power. The scandal also served as a reminder that torture is never justified, no matter the circumstances.
