In 2012, DNA evidence finally exonerated Alman. He was released from prison and reunited with his family and friends. His story is a gripping and inspiring account of one man's fight for justice.
The Wrongful Conviction
David Alman was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1955. He met Ronald Sisman in high school, and the two became close friends. In 1981, Sisman was found dead in his apartment, and Alman was arrested for his murder.
At trial, the prosecution's case against Alman was based on circumstantial evidence. There were no eyewitnesses to the murder, and the only physical evidence linking Alman to the crime was a bloody fingerprint found on a piece of paper in Sisman's apartment. However, the fingerprint was not a perfect match, and Alman's defense attorney argued that it could have been planted.
Despite the lack of strong evidence, Alman was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. He appealed his conviction, but his appeals were denied. Alman spent the next 28 years in prison, maintaining his innocence the entire time.
The Fight for Exoneration
While in prison, Alman never gave up hope that he would one day be exonerated. He worked with his lawyers to file appeals and to seek out new evidence that could prove his innocence.
In 2009, Alman's case was taken up by the Innocence Project, a non-profit organization that works to exonerate innocent people who have been wrongly convicted. The Innocence Project conducted DNA testing on the bloody fingerprint that had been used to convict Alman. The results of the DNA testing showed that the fingerprint did not belong to Alman.
With the new DNA evidence, Alman's attorneys filed a motion for a new trial. The motion was granted, and Alman was released on bail in 2011. In 2012, Alman was finally exonerated of the murder of Ronald Sisman.
Life After Exoneration
After being exonerated, Alman returned to Chicago and reunited with his family and friends. He has since become an advocate for criminal justice reform and works to help other wrongfully convicted people.
In 2016, Alman published a book about his experience, entitled Exoneration: The True Story of David Alman, Wrongfully Convicted for 28 Years. The book is a gripping and inspiring account of one man's fight for justice.
David Alman's story is a testament to the power of hope and the importance of never giving up. After being wrongly convicted of murder and spending 28 years in prison, Alman was finally exonerated by DNA evidence. His story is an inspiration to all who have been impacted by the criminal justice system.
