Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was a Bangladeshi politician and statesman who served as the first President of Bangladesh from 1971 to 1972 and as the first Prime Minister of Bangladesh from 1972 to 1975. He is considered to be the father of Bangladesh and is widely revered as one of the greatest leaders in the country's history.
Rahman was born in Tungipara, Gopalganj District, Bengal Presidency, British India (now Bangladesh) on March 17, 1920. He was the third of four children born to Sheikh Lutfar Rahman and Sayera Khatun. Rahman's father was a prosperous farmer and businessman, and his mother was a devout Muslim. Rahman received his early education at a local madrasa, and then attended Gopalganj High School. He later studied law at the University of Dhaka, but was expelled for his political activities.
Rahman's political career began in the 1940s, when he joined the Awami Muslim League. He quickly rose through the ranks of the party, and became one of its most prominent leaders. In 1948, Rahman was elected to the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan, and served as the party's chief whip. He also played a leading role in the Language Movement, which advocated for the recognition of Bengali as an official language of Pakistan.
In 1952, Rahman was arrested for his political activities, and was imprisoned for several months. After his release, he continued to be a vocal critic of the Pakistani government. In 1958, Rahman was arrested again, and was sentenced to six months in prison. After his release, he went into exile in India.
In 1969, Rahman returned to Bangladesh to lead the Awami League in the 1970 general elections. The Awami League won a landslide victory, and Rahman became the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly of Pakistan. However, the Pakistani government refused to transfer power to the Awami League, and this led to the Bangladesh Liberation War.
The Bangladesh Liberation War was a nine-month conflict between the Pakistani military and the Bangladeshi Mukti Bahini, which was led by Rahman. The war ended with the surrender of the Pakistani military on December 16, 1971, and the independence of Bangladesh was declared.
Rahman became the first President of Bangladesh on December 17, 1971. He served as President until January 12, 1972, when he was elected Prime Minister. Rahman led Bangladesh through its early years of independence, and introduced a number of important reforms, including the adoption of a new constitution, the establishment of a secular state, and the of land reforms.
In 1975, Rahman was assassinated by a group of army officers. His death led to a period of political instability in Bangladesh, and it was not until 1991 that the country returned to democracy.
Rahman is considered to be one of the greatest leaders in Bangladeshi history. He is widely respected for his leadership during the Bangladesh Liberation War, and for his contributions to the development of the country. Rahman's legacy continues to inspire Bangladeshis today.
